Martin SB is a renowned boilie producing company in Europe. Before launching a new product, a long period of testing proceeds. This time that resulted in very tasty boilie plus side products: The Spicy Masala. In this advertorial Rolf Bouman and Cyriel Ramlakhan will tell you how this new flavour originated.
It’s April 2016 when I overhear Cyriel for the first time about his idea for a new boilie. Excited he talks about the most amazing spices in his kitchen cupboard next to the peanut butter, salt and pepper. ‘We’ve gotta do something with this!’, he concludes with fire in his eyes! From scratch I’m enthusiastic. My first homemade boilie was based on hot spices and frankly… I caught so much carp then that I had to be operated on my back. But, it’s 2016 and we are focussing on the introduction of SWEET 17. Not the right time for another new boilie.
As a dedicated carp angler, you want to stand out from the others. There’s a thin line between catching and blanking. That made me decide to look for something that didn’t already exist. Several well-known carp anglers wrote articles about stunning catches, using products straight from the supermarket. I’ve got Surinamese roots and a mother who is a true chef in the kitchen. So, the decision wasn’t that difficult. A spicy boilie with a hint of Suriname.
At Martin SB we don’t believe in releasing new boilies too often. When we do decide to develop a new boilie, at first, we must know if this new one will be an addition to our ranges or if it will replace a boilie that’s less popular. We don’t aim for an endless assortment, 6 flavours per range makes it clear for what we stand for. Besides, by taking our time we can develop the new boilie to perfection, and have it tested to the max by our team in Europe. Cyriel was full of ideas about the Spicy Masala and it was up to our chief boiliemaker to put all of those in a 20mm boilie and make it next level.
When I’m eating a typical Surinamese dish, I always think of the Spicy Masala. Very hot and super spicy! With that in mind, one night I decided to go through with it and order some Martin SB basemix. Four days later I’m in my shed making the first batch by hand. Obviously, as a ‘home-roller’, I can never get the result I was hoping for, but the intense flavour of all the fresh spices made me so happy that I decided to take the next step. A few weeks later I got a small, professionally produced, batch by Martin SB of Spicy Masala! Successful fishing sessions in Holland and abroad made it all clear: The Spicy Masala was officially born!
It’s September 2019 and the Spicy Masala is completely ready to go. To get enough photos and videoshots for promotional activities, we decide to provide six team members with a sufficient amount of boilies and side products. Autumn is the perfect time of the year to really check out if this boilie is as good as we think and if it will truly make a difference. For some of these team members, it’s the first time they get to see the Spicy Masala. They squeeze, smell and lick the boilie, some diehard even eat them! They are all super enthusiastic and are especially happy with the unique spicy coating.
When I received these super positive reactions from the team, I was obviously over the moon! Day after day we received photos of great catches. The genius idea of Martin SB to coat the boilie is fresh spices makes it even more attractive. It’s almost impossible not to eat them yourself!
It’s the middle of December 2019 now, the last results have arrived. And they are impressive! Obviously, team members of Martin SB are good carp anglers, but the amount of (large) carp they were able to land the last couple of months, is truly next level. The Spicy Masala will be introduced at Carp Zwolle 2020 in Holland and at the fair in Montluçon in France in 2020. Obviously, with all the side products such as: Super Smog, Dip, fluor and foodbased pop-ups.
It’s fantastic to be a part of developing a boilie based on your own ideas, it’s even better that in 2020 everyone can fish and catch with the Spicy Masala!
